Human trafficking and responsible tourism

In Southern Africa, and in other African countries, there are many economically vulnerable people, especially women and children. They may be promised offers of employment under false pretence, forced to work without pay, held against their will and exploited.

Phaphama condemns this violation of human rights and encourages all visitors to be aware of this inhumane practice, which is an internationally recognized crime. We urge you not to accept offers of sexual services and drugs which may be provided by victims of trafficking. Your responsible choice can make a difference to any victim suffering from such serious abuse.

If you suspect an incident of trafficking in persons, please contact the following helpline of the International Organisation for Migration: 0800 555 999 or the Johannesburg office of TALITHA KUM: 011 327 0145 .
