Building the whole school into a centre of excellence

Who will benefit by attending:
All stakeholders in schools i.e. educators, learners, parents, SGB members and support staff, seeking to build the whole school into a centre of excellence.

Overview:
It is our understanding and experience that a school’s ability to create an effective culture of learning and teaching is fundamentally linked to the dynamics of human relationships in the school.

The school environment usually places great emphasis on achieving academic, sporting and cultural excellence, while neglecting the importance of nurturing and developing people-relationships within these institutions. This impacts negatively on people’s willingness to contribute of their best whilst striving towards self-actualisation. This can result in dysfunctional school environments that are challenged by conflictual interpersonal relationships (between all stakeholders), high levels of de-motivation, disciplinary challenges, lack of respect, substance abuse and violence.

Phaphama Initiatives’ workshops, based on the Alternatives to Violence (AVP, 15 year olds to adults) and Help Increase the Peace Project (HIPP, 12 – 14 year olds) methodologies, address these issues through a practical and experiential methodology that does not rely on lecturing and note-taking, and is great fun.

This experience of creating meaningful relationships with colleagues and peers during the training is very powerful. Participants are provided with a “safe space” in which to work together as a healthy community and positively address the often sensitive issues of their interpersonal challenges and stresses.

A Basic Conflict Transformation workshop covers the following broad areas:

1. Affirmation
2. Communication
3. Co-operation and team building
4. Conflict transformation

Advanced and Training for Facilitators workshops are also available, which enable learners and educators to continue conducting these courses for their peers in the school.

Outcomes will include:
• Improving participants’ understanding of the interrelationship between communication, team work, conflict resolution and leadership.
• Raising awareness and understanding of the impact of improved communication in the school, to enhance participants’ ability to resolve their own conflicts as they arise, thus preventing conflicts from becoming destructive and violent.
• Building relationships based on respect, trust and collaboration.
• Developing participants’ skills in effective communication.
• Building positive team-enhancing practices which contribute to interpersonal co-operation and supportive working relationships.
• Improving participants’ levels of enthusiasm, motivation and productivity.
• Identifying institutionally entrenched practices that may be perceived as destructive or discriminatory in any way.
• Exploring the process of change and development in individuals and groups and its effect on performance.

“The things we talked about are the real things that we see and do everyday.”

“I learned something about myself – that I don’t give my learners space to reach their own answers.”

“I learned that it is possible to follow a non-violent part even when the confrontation becomes heated. I-messages will definitely become part of my way of dealing with issues.”
