Youth Mentorship Programme – Correctional Centres

From 2018 to 2020 the Youth Mentorship Programme was successfully implemented as part of a rehabilitation and reintegration programme in the correctional centres,  Bizzah Makhate (Kroonstad); Polokwane Management Area and Bethal Management Area (Mpumalanga). More than 192 inmates were trained as mentors, and began to change their lives for the better by becoming role models to their cell mates whilst incarcerated, and to children and youth in their communities when released.

Ms Ancy Segobela of Tzaneen – whom Phaphama met in 2019 while she was incarcerated for a violent crime in the Polokwane Management Area – says that the mentorship programme played a significant role in her rehabilitation. The mentorship activities heightened her awareness of the harm violence causes to her and others. As an ex-inmate, she uses her mentorship skills to mentor youth-at-risk in her community. Phaphama provides her with coaching support and she works in liaison with the ward councillor. She believes that this has greatly improved her chances to reintegrate into her community.
