Youth mentorship programme – Public Employment Programme

Between 2014 and 2016 Phaphama successfully implemented a Youth Mentorship programme as part of a Public Employment Programme (PEP) work-stream for the Community Works Programme (CWP) in the Gauteng communities of Kagiso, Mohlakeng and Bekkersdal (West Rand) and Erasmus (Tshwane).

The success of this effort resulted in the development of a programme called Westonaria Youth Initiatives (WeYI), which Phaphama implemented in partnership with the Seriti Institute, funded by Claude Leon Foundation between 2016 and 2019. Again, this was implemented as part of the CWP. WeYI integrated the Youth Mentorship programme practice and Seriti’s Football4Youth (F4Y) programme into one work-stream for the CWP sites of Westonaria. The programme trained 189 CWP participants of Westonaria, particularly of Bekkersdal, Simunye, Westonaria Borwa and Zuurberkom. Of these 189, 77 specialised in mentorship and 54 specialised in football (and to an extent netball) coaching and reached at least 5200 children and youth daily.
